The truffle hunt

Our truffle hunt, i.e. our trailing after the hunters and their dogs, was a lot more successful than that in Piedmont some years ago. This area has at least 3 kinds of truffles, of which the white is the most prized ( expensive). It was interesting to find whites, which Piedmont claimed were unique to that region.
The principal hunter is very purposive about his truffling, planting trees, irrigating,  spreading spores on the ground strategically. This seems about as intensive can be for an essentially wild organism. Talk of inoculation is somewhat artificial by comparison.

  1. Errr....is it interesting to hunt for truffles? But the scenery looks nice, and I'm glad you caught (well, found) some.

  2. Actually it is fun watching the dogs, and the desperate competition with the handler to stop the dog eating something it has found worth €€€ to humans and accept a trait instead. The leftover summer black truffles are so so close to the surface that a few paw scratches and they’re out, and rolling down the hill like a ping pong ball. So man and dog in hot pursuit. It is also interesting as huge primary industry in this part of Le Marche.
