We had a one night stopover in Sydney to see the Opera on the harbour. The construction has been copiously described in the Review section of the Saturday Australian. The big production differences are that the orchestra is under the stage somewhere on a floating platform and invisible except when trooping over gangplank to get in and out, and that the sound is amplified and distributed throughout the seating, so the acoustic experience is slightly echoed, and of course very loud.
The live troupe of camels (including a baby) for the victory procession is not unprecedented but adds jollity to the victory procession.
The costumes and choreography are splendidly spectacular but the mix of ancient Egypt, 20 th century fascism, and modern Ethiopia grates somewhat.
We loved Latonia Moore as Aida and David Parkin (Ramfis) and Michael Honeyman (Amonastro).
It all sounds very impressive, but was your trip specifically to see Aida?
